Dr. Gwendolyn (Jones) Farmer, Ph.D.
Dr. Gwendolyn Farmer Ph.D., 86, of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, formerly of Rochester, Beaver County, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2016.
Born May 4, 1930 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, she was the youngest child of the now late Albert and Georgia Jones
She retired after distinguished service as a Director in the Pennsylvania Auditor General’s Office. Her previous employment included administrative positions in the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and in the State Department of Education.
Additionally, she was the former Executive Director of the Fayette County CETA program, Director of the Counseling and Placement Office at Seton Hill University, and former teacher in the Midland School District.
Gwendolyn was a member of Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church in New Brighton, Pa.
She was a 1948 graduate of Beaver Falls High School and received her Bachelor of Science Degree f rom Geneva College and her Masters and Ph.D. in Education from the University of Pittsburgh.
Gwendolyn received an Outstanding Alumni Award from Geneva College.
Her memberships included: Wenonah Chapter Eastern Star, Fayette County Housing Authority Board, Business and Professional Women’s Organization, and the Women of Wealth Investment Club.
She enjoyed a variety of crafting including doll making and ceramics, but mostly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Her husband, Dr. Francis A. ‘Alex’ Farmer Jr. in 1984; a son, Bruce Albert Farmer in 2005; son-in-law, Dwight Lynn White in 2008; two brothers and five sisters preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen F. White of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Anita Y. Walters (Andre), Uniontown; one son, Francis A. Farmer III (Carla) of Sicklerville, New Jersey; daughter-in-law, Mayra Farmer of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; six grandchildren: Stephen Tolliver (Tawnia) of North Carolina, Stacey White Jones (Sean) of Massachusetts, Alexis Farmer Gwendolyn Walters of Virginia, Christopher Farmer of New Jersey, Ashley Farmer of North Carolina and Chanelle Farmer of New Jersey; two great grandchildren: Noelle Tolliver and Ethan Tolliver; a sister, Juanita Watson of Michigan; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday December 17th, with interment to take place in Beaver Cemetery, Beaver, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes contributions are made in memory of Gwendolyn to the East End United Community Center, 150 Coolspring Street, Uniontown, PA 15401.
