Greensburg man jailed in fatal hit and run
A Greensburg man was arrested for allegedly killing a bicyclist after he was reportedly found driving 93 miles per hour in a truck that smelled like marijuana.
A state trooper stopped Roman David Herrin, 22, 14 miles from the crash scene and eight minutes after he allegedly hit bicyclist Gary Lee Lewellen, 47, of Uniontown on Monday.
Police said Herrin and Lewellen were both traveling south on Connellsville Road in North Union Township when Herrin allegedly drove his 2013 Dodge Ram onto the south berm, running over the bicyclist just before 10:30 a.m., according to the affidavit of probable cause filed in his case.
First responders attempted to resuscitate Lewellen, but were only able to regain a faint pulse. He was transported to Uniontown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 11 a.m.
Herrin told police that when he was driving on Connellsville Road, he saw a maroon vehicle in front of him swerve into the opposing lane. He then felt a bump, he said.
He said he stopped a short time later to check his vehicle and immediately called his mother and a body shop, according to the affidavit.
A trooper stopped Herrin on Route 119 near Everson at 10:35 a.m. for driving 93 miles per hour in a 50 miles per hour zone. The truck had fresh front end damage, including burnt orange paint that appeared to match Lewellen’s bicycle, according to police.
Herrin agreed to a drug evaluation and was determined to be under the influence of marijuana, according to court documents. He was taken to Uniontown Hospital for a blood draw.
He is charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, accidents involving death or personal injury, homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence.
Herrin is lodged in Fayette County Prison in lieu of a $200,000 bond.
