Republicans retain, take over offices locally

By The 3 min read

In a race that went back and forth all night, Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey appears to have retained the seat he’s filled since 2011.

According to unofficial results from the state, Toomey received 48.89 percent of the vote to Democrat challenger Katie McGinty’s 47.26 percent. Libertarian candidate Edward T. Clifford III received 3.85 percent of the vote.

Locally, Toomey carried Fayette, Washington, Westmoreland and Greene counties. He received 55.81 percent in Fayette, 57.64 percent in Greene, 56.52 percent in Washington and 59.65 percent in Westmoreland.

Both the Senate race and the state’s presidential results kept many awake late into the night, waiting to see which candidate would carry Pennsylvania.

The state’s voters pulled for Republican Donald J. Trump, giving him 48.83 percent of their vote to Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton’s 47.6 percent, according to unofficial results. Pennsylvania was one of the key states whose electoral votes put Trump over the top to become the country’s new leader.

U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Everett, retained his seat with more than 63 percent of the vote in the 9th Congressional District. Challenger Art Halvorson, also a Republican, ran on the Democrat ticket when he received enough write-in votes in the primary election to do so.

Voters generally followed the Republican-leaning trend in selecting state representatives.

In the 49th, where Rep. Pete Daley, D-California, announced his retirement at the beginning of the year, Republican Bud Cook bested Democrat Alan Benyak. Unofficial results show Cook won both the Washington and Fayette portions of the district, with 53 and 56 percents respectively.

A Republican also took over the seat in the 58th, where, like Daley, longtime lawmaker Ted Harhai announced his retirement.

Justin Walsh received 61 percent of the vote, besting Democrat Mary E. Popovich, according to unofficial results.

After several terms representing the 51st, Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-South Union Township, was ousted by Republican challenger Matthew Dowling. While Mahoney won Fayette County with 50.39 percent of the vote, Dowling took the portions of Somerset County that seat covers. He received 67.6 percent of the vote to Mahoney’s 32.4 percent, according to the state.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Ryan Warner defeated Democrat challenger James Mari, receiving more than 60 percent of the vote in both the Fayette and Westmoreland county portions of the 52nd District.

Rep. Pam Snyder, a Jefferson Democrat, was re-elected. Snyder bested Republican challenger Elizabeth Rohanna McClure in Fayette, Greene and Washington counties. The closest vote was in Greene, the home county for both women. There, Snyder received 50.71 percent of the vote, and Rohanna McClure received 49.29 percent.
