Betty A. Varnak Gancos

Betty A (Varnak) Gancos, age 89, of Merrittstown, Pa., passed away on Monday, November 14, 2016 in Sunrise Senior Living, McCandless, Pa. She was born on November 27, 1926 in Mather, Pa., a daughter of George Varnak and Pauline (Koperdak) Varnak.

Betty was a member of the former Holy Rosary Church, Republic, where she sang with the church choir.

She was a retired teacher from Redstone Junior High School, Brownsville Area School District, member of Pennsylvania State Education Association (retired), National Education Association (retired), the Fayette County Association of School Retirees, Dunlap’s Creek Historical Society, and the Merrittstown Villagers.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James Gancos, sister, Helen Kelly, brothers, Alexander Varnak, and Brother Charles Varnak C.S.C., and her parents.

Surviving are a son, James Gancos, of Wexford, Pa.; daughters, Jane Daubenspeck and husband, Larry, of Denver, Colorado, and Beth Lang and husband, Robert, of Wexford, Pa.; grandchildren: James, Brian, Tara, Zachary, Joshua, Jessica, and Jacqueline; great grandchildren: Gabriella, Preston, Mackenzie, Caleb, and Audrey; and a sister, Medge Dayton, of South Carolina.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Saturday, November 19, 2016, in St. Francis of Assisi Church, (Footedale worship site) at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Alvin Enal Cabungcal, as Celebrant.

Interment will follow in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Republic, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Betty’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, at donate.cancer.org/index.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the ROBERT T. KISH FUNERAL HOME, 1 Legion St., Republic, Pa.
