State police are assisting Redstone Township Police with the investigation of a fatal shooting that occurred at the Republic Volunteer Fire Department late Sunday afternoon.

A Republic man is charged in the death of a 16-year-old junior volunteer firefighter at the Republic Volunteer Fire Company Sunday afternoon.

Police have charged 21-year-old George A. Matis Jr. of Republic with criminal homicide and reckless endangerment for allegedly shooting the teen, whom authorities have not yet identified.

Redstone Township Police Department received a report at 4:01 p.m. of a male that suffered a gunshot wound at 155 Republic Road at the Republic Volunteer Fire Company. Upon their arrival it was determined the teen had been struck in the face by a bullet and died at the scene.

The incident happened just as the Republic VFC prepared for the annual Light Up Night. Around 5 p.m. Republic Volunteer Fire Company had posted to their Facebook Page, “Due to emergency. Light up night parade is cancelled.”

Republic Road was shut down for several hours as the investigation took place.

Matis was arraigned late Sunday, and is being held at the Fayette County Prison without bond pending a preliminary hearing on Dec. 7, according to police.
