Investigation continues into infant found in North Belle Vernon trash

An investigation is underway to determine if criminal charges should be filed against the mother of an infant found this past weekend in the trash can at a North Belle Vernon gas station.

According to the affidavit filed with Magisterial District Judge Joseph Dalfonso in Monessen to obtain a search warrant for patient care reports, emergency medical personnel were called to the 7-Eleven/BP station at 3 Fayette St., North Belle Vernon. Paramedics from Mon Valley EMS thought they were responding to someone having a miscarriage in the women’s restroom.

Upon arriving at 1:16 p.m., paramedics found a woman in the restroom. As they prepared to transport her to the hospital paramedic Terry Foster heard a noise coming from the trash can and found a full-term baby girl still attached to the placenta.

“The child didn’t have any injuries or appear to be in distress,” said Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck.

The infant and mother were taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center for treatment. Peck said the case remains under investigation and it has not yet been determined if charges will be filed against the mother, whom Peck described as an adult female from southwestern Pennsylvania.
