Mary June (Gribble) Pepper
Mary June (Gribble) Pepper, age 95, of Centerville, Pa., went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017.
She was born on June 3, 1921 in Kingwood West Virginia a daughter of the late Daniel Gribble and Bessie Pearl (Bucklew) Gribble.
She was a graduate of California High School, class of 1939.
On August 2, 1941, she married her sweetheart, Paul E. Pepper, of Clover Hill. Together they had four children and enjoyed 40 years of marriage, until his death on September 13, 1981.
Mrs. Pepper was a member of the California Calvary Church of the Nazarene for 75 years where she variously served as Sunday School Teacher, Director of Children’s Programming, and President of the Missionary Society.
A lifelong music lover, she served as the church’s pianist and organist for 65 years.
She displayed a passionate concern for the home-bound of the church and visited them twice a week for many years.
Mary June was an active participant in the Nazarene Church’s Work and Witness missionary trips to Costa Rica, Haiti, and Guatemala.
She was a faithful volunteer in the adult day care at the Center in the Woods, and served as a volunteer ombudsman for Aging Services of Washington County.
Mary June had a love of nature and creation and also loved to travel, and tell stories of her trips to Europe, Egypt, Central America, the Holy Land, Alaska, Hawaii, and China, where she walked the Great Wall.
She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for her sons’ troops.
She also served on the Washington Board of Elections.
Mrs. Pepper was well known for her homemade bread and rolls, and especially her cinnamon buns.
Surviving her are sons David Pepper (Alice) of Birdsboro, Pa., and L. Douglas Pepper, MD, (Maria) of Belle Vernon, Pa.; daughter, Darla Pepper-Miller (George) of Washington, Pa.; ten grandchildren: Wesley Pepper, Russell Pepper, Daren Pepper, Mark Pepper, Melissa Miller, Pam Thomas, Danny Miller, Elizabeth Pepper, MD, J. Paul Pepper, and Rachel Balinski; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grand children; a sister, Yvonne Nethken of Morgantown, West Virginia; sister-in-law, Nancy Wolfe also of Morgantown; a brother-in-law, Robert Leeper of Burton, Ohio; and many cousins, nieces, nephews.
Preceding her in death were her son, Darrell, who died on June 13, 2008, and four brothers and two sisters.
Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in JOHN B. GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 2830 Main St., Beallsville, Pa.
An additional viewing will be held Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the CALIFORNIA CALVARY CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE, California, Pa., from 10 to 11 a.m. where Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. with Pastor David Watts officiating.
Interment will follow in Beallsville Cemetery.
