Theron James Turner
Theron James Turner, 91, passed away April 18, 2017 after a brief illness.
Born on July 6, 1925 in Chalk Hill, Theron attended Shafer School-house and South Union High School until enlisting in the Navy in 1942.
A veteran of World War II, he served as a member of the U.S. Navy Patrol Bombing Squadron 118 as a 1st radio and front upper deck gunner for the King Crew.
Theron received a Presidential Unit Citation for extra-ordinary heroism in action during the Okinawa Campaign from April 26-August 8, 1945.
Upon returning home, Theron took a job working on the construction of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel in Pittsburgh. Afterwards, he was employed as a driver for Atlantic Freightlines in Uniontown as well as Cooper Jarrett, INC.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union for over 30 years.
After his retirement, Theron could be found working around his home or on his tractor, spending time at Bryner Lumber Company with his half-brothers, Red and Ray Bryner, or bowling on a local league with his nephew Luke Bryner.
Theron is survived by his wife, Sherry (Girard) Turner of Chalk Hill, whom he married in June of 1951; a son, James R. Turner of Sharpsville; a daughter, Tammy R. Turner of Sharpsville; his grandchildren Kelly (Turner) Quednau and husband Justin of Chalk Hill; Stacey (Turner) Knox and husband Cory of Canfield, Ohio; Hilary (Gales) Carte and husband Tony of Sharpsville; and Britany Gales of Sharpsville; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, John M. Turner; his mother, Mary Turner; and sister, Nellie Marker.
Family and friends will be received at the CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME in Hopwood, Pa. today, April 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m., the hour of service with Reverend David Herring officiating.
Interment in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Chalk Hill, Pa.
