Jules H. Quertinmont “Buddy”
Jules H. “Buddy” Quertinmont, 74, lifelong resident of Point Marion, Pa., passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017 in Morgantown.
Born in Morgantown, West Virginia on September 1, 1943, he was a son of the late Virginia (Kidwell) and Jules J. Quertinmont Jr., and a member of a Point Marion family dating back to the late 1800’s.
He attended Point Marion High School and was in the first class to graduate from the new Albert Gallatin High School in 1961.
A basketball standout, he was a top player in the state of Pennsylvania in scoring, earning All-County and All-State accolades.
Recruited by many schools, he accepted a scholarship to West Virginia University, achieving his childhood dream of becoming a Mountaineer, which he would remain the rest of his life.
After graduating in 1966, he played in the Eastern Professional Basketball League, taught and coached at Mapletown High School, and was assistant coach at Albert Gallatin High School.
In 1970, he joined with his father in the family business of Point Marion Ford, which he ran until his retirement in 2012.
In 2014, Buddy was honored to be inducted into the Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame, in recognition of his outstanding basketball career at Albert Gallatin and at WVU.
His community involvement include memberships in the Point Marion United Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Syria Shrine, served a term on the Albert Gallatin School Board, started the Albert Gallatin Elementary Basketball program, was a member for many years of the Point Marion Volunteer Fire Department, the F.O.E. Aerie 1932, a member for over 40 years and Past President the Point Marion Rotary Club, and currently the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Evergreen Memorial Park.
Outside of Point Marion, Buddy served as Past President of the Pittsburgh District of Ford Dealers Association and Past President of the Varsity Club and the Lettermen’s Club at WVU, and was instrumental in starting the WVU Wheels Club. He was life-long member of the Lake-O-Wood Club in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia and with the Fayette County Hall of Fame and the WVU Hall of Fame committees, and formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Pines Country Club.
In his spare time, he was an avid sportsman and was able to hunt in venues all across the country, and was a collector of antique cars.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Brenda (Smith) Quertinmont; two children and their spouses: Jules R. “Buddy” and Valerie Quertinmont of Lake Lynn, Pa., and Lori Beth and Richie Martin of Morgantown, West Virginia; grandchildren whom he loved so dearly: Jacob Martin, Maggie Quertinmont and Jules W. “Will” Quertinmont; one sister, Laura Kay Powell of Morgantown; and many, many friends and associates.
Friends will be received in RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, Pa., on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Visitation will continue on Saturday, December 9, in the POINT MARION UNITED METHODIST CHURCH from 10 until the 11 a.m., the hour of Service with Rev. Junius Lewis and Rev. Beverly Roscoe officiating.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion.
Point Marion Volunteer Fire Department will hold Services in funeral home on Friday at 6:45 p.m.
