George “Skip” Lazarcheck, World War II United States Army Veteran
George ‘Skip’ Lazarcheck, age 94, of Hopwood, Pa., passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, December 31, 2016.
He was born August 28, 1922 in Coolspring, Pa., a son of John and Mary (Mehall) Lazarcheck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers and sisters; and by his wife, Wilma Jean Layhue Stokes Lazarcheck in October, 2003.
He proudly served in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II where he landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and fought in Europe. He received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.
After returning from war, he worked as a Coal Miner and Coal Hauler.
He eventually retired after 50 years as a professional house painter.
He enjoyed wood working, Pittsburgh Pirates baseball, and playing the PA lottery.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Left to cherish George’s memory are his sister, Margaret ‘Peg’ Mihok; two daughters: Georgia VanSickle and husband Brian of Coolspring, Pa., and Brenda Lazarcheck of San Antonio, Texas; one son, Edward Samuel Stokes and wife Roseann of Detroit, Michigan; ten grandchildren: Christopher Joiner and wife Angela, Heather Landman and husband Anthony, John Michael Stokes, Matthew VanSickle, Jennifer Contreras, Joshua Stokes, Adam VanSickle and wife Jessica, Jacob Stokes, Rebecca Contreras, Jeanna Stokes George was blessed with five great grandchildren whom he dearly loved: Cassie Joiner, Chloe Joiner, Colby Joiner, Maci Matthews, and Austin Landman. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Leroy Pickstone and wife Wanda; and sister-in-law, Ruth Ann McNally; two pet companions: Teddy and Cuppie; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the ANDREW D FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIES, INC., 80 Morgantown Street, Uniontown, Pennsylvania where the family will receive friends on Thursday, January 5, from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. Visitation will continue in the funeral home on Friday, January 6, 2017 from 10 until 11 a.m. followed by a Service Celebrating George’s Life at 11 a.m. with Rev. Robert Miller officiating.
Interment will follow at White Rock Cemetery.
Full Military Rites will be accorded at graveside by AMVETS Post 103 of Hopwood, Pa.
