Robert B. Custer, Retired Pennsylvania State Trooper
Robert B. Custer, 77, of New Paris, Pa., died Sunday, January 1, 2017 at UPMC Altoona Hospital.
He was born on May 18, 1939 in Johnstown, Pa., son of the late Phillip and Mary (Wood) Custer.
On September 28, 2000, he married Linda (Hammer) Custer who preceded him in death on September 22, 2015.
Robert graduated from Johnstown High School.
He worked at Roberts Tree Farm and also Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown before becoming a Pennsylvania State Trooper in 1961 and retired in 1991.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, beer drinker.
He is survived by a son, James Custer, of Uniontown, Pa.; step-daughter, Nancy Stewart-Franczak and husband John of Del Ray Beach, Florida; two step-sons: Robert C. Stewart and wife Debbie of Leola, Pa., Richard A. Stewart and wife Elaine of Schellsburg, Pa.; five step-grandchildren: Ricky, Merry, Jacob, Jason, and Sarah; one great step-grandchild, Ava; two sisters: Audrey Babich widow of Fred of Johnstown, Pa., Bonnie Freeman and husband Dick of Johnstown; neighbors, Dave and Cathy Leonard, of New Paris; his beloved dog, Skipper; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Ada Carol Custer; two brothers, Bill and his wife Ann, and Jim and his wife Gerry; one niece, Kim Bloom; and a nephew, Scott Custer.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel at the TIMOTHY A. BERKEBILE FUNERAL HOME. Friends will be received on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. until the hour of the Service at the funeral home.
