Masontown seeks grant funding for projects

MASONTOWN — Borough council is seeking grants for several infrastructure projects.

Council members received an update on the grant applications from engineer Bill Johnson on Tuesday.

An application for a $200,216 grant for new traffic control signs such as stop and yield signs has been submitted to the Federal Highway Administration, Johnson said.

A ruling on the application is expected next year, he said.

An application for a grant from the Fayette County Community Development Block Grant to replace the water line under Lyons Lane will be submitted and an application for a grant from Local Share Account for replacing water line under North Water and South Liberty streets will be submitted, Johnson said.

He said the Provins Avenue water line replacement project, which is being funded by CDBG money awarded by the Fayette County Redevelopment Authority, should begin by Aug. 1, he said.

In unrelated business, the police vehicle parking lot could become a place where people who buy and sell over the Internet can meet to make the sales.

Council President Frank McLaughlin said “OfferUp,” an Internet sales site needs safe places where people who agree to buy and sell items can meet to make the purchases.

Police Chief Joe Ryan said security cameras are required and the police vehicle parking lot would be best place to install them.

He said he would obtain prices for cameras.

Ryan also said he would give council a price for replacing the police department’s eight tasers. One is 11 years old, the rest at nine years old and two are out of service, he said.

A company is offering five year lease-to-own deals that include holsters, a battery and duty and training cartridges costing $31 a month per unit, he said.
