A Washington man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after threatening to shoot his girlfriend and refusing to exit a residence, early Sunday morning in Canton Township.

According to the police report, a 50-year-old man discharged one round from a handgun inside a residence at 521 Bower Ave. and threatened to shoot his girlfriend causing her to flee and call 911.

When state police arrived on scene around 1 a.m., the Washington man would not exit the residence, and the man discharged several more rounds through the ceiling of the residence continuing his exit refusal, according to the police report.

State police special emergency response team was activated, and upon receiving an arrest warrant, they made entry into the residence and found the man dead.

According to police, the man “had been drinking and became upset for unknown reasons,” when the incident occurred.
