Uniontown Hospital buys property to accommodate planned parking garage

Uniontown Hospital has purchased a property on the 500 block of West Berkeley Street as part of an expansion project that includes a planned parking garage estimated to hold about 400 vehicles.

Josh Krysak, the hospital’s manager of community relations, said the house that was purchased is located across Berkeley from Delaware Avenue with motorists approaching from a “fairly” steep decline to a stop sign at the intersection.

“So removing a residential dwelling from that location will take any occupants of that home out of harm’s way should an accident occur,” Krysak said. “And that house will fall in the direct path of headlights that would be exiting the site of the proposed parking garage.”

Krysak said the garage plan is still in early stages and is part of a campuswide improvement plan designed to make the hospital as patient- and visitor-friendly as possible and to improve the overall aesthetics of the facility.”

“The garage would relieve parking concerns across the campus by providing a main area for employee parking,” he said.

Uniontown Hospital is one of Fayette County’s largest employers, with roughly 1,200 employees.

Documents filed with the Fayette County Recorder of Deeds shows the hospital paid $77,000 for the property with an existing structure located at 500 W. Berkeley St. owned by John and Dora Moser. The transaction was recorded June 14.

“As an independent community hospital dedicated to the needs of Fayette County, we are in a unique position to invest in our facility to make sure we are providing the services and care our friends, neighbors and family count on us to deliver,” Krysak said. “We continue to grow and adapt to the changing health care needs, and we continue to upgrade and improve our campus to make sure our patients and their families can easily access the care they need.”
