Scottdale woman charged for overdosing while children home
A Scottdale mother is facing two charges each of possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child after she allegedly overdosed in front of her two infant children, leaving Suboxone and Xanax pills and a “loaded” needle lying on the floor.
Emily Elizabeth Garsteck, 20, called police Tuesday just after 10 p.m. to report that her uncle had her sons, 3 months and 1 year, at his home and would not return them.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, when Garsteck was questioned as to why the uncle took the children, she said it was because he accused her of using drugs.
The woman’s uncle reportedly told police he had the children because Garsteck’s father asked him to get the children when he found his daughter unconscious in her room with her children, surrounded by pills.
Garsteck’s uncle told police that when he got to his niece’s home, the 1-year-old had nothing on but a shirt and was resting his head on his unconscious mother. The 3-month-old was asleep on the floor.
The police officer talked to Garsteck’s father, who said he arrived home from work around 6 p.m. to find his daughter unconscious in her room. Police said he said that the Xanax pills were near the sleeping baby.
Police reported that Suboxone pills and needles were also found in the room, with one loaded, possibly with Suboxone.
The Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau was notified and said the children could stay with Garsteck’s uncle until a referral could be followed up on.
Emily Garsteck was taken into custody and admitted to using six 8-milligram Suboxone and four 7-milligram Xanax pills.
A preliminary hearing for the above charges as well as one charge of possession of drug paraphernalia will be held before Magisterial District Judge Charles Moore on March 22 at 9:15 a.m.
