Richard “Dick” Walter Powell
Richard Walter Powell ‘Dick’, 76, of Uniontown, Pa., passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2017
Richard was born on Saturday, May 11, 1940 in Helvetia, Dubois, Pa.
Richard met and married the love of his life Rosalee (Kolosky) Powell ‘Sis’ in July of 1966. The couple settled in Uniontown where they raised their four children Jodi, Richard Jr., Michael and Shawna.
Richard was a devoted husband and father and to anyone who knew him, his family was always first, and will be greatly missed by all that loved him.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 50 wonderful years, Rosalee (Kolosky) Powell; and his parents, William and Eliza Powell of Brockway Pa.
He is survived by his brother, William Powell and wife Karen of Brockway, Pa. Richard was the loving father of Jodi Powell Butler and husband Dan of Uniontown, Pa., Richard W. Powell Jr. and wife Julie of Point Marion, Pa., Michael Powell of Uniontown, Pa., Shawna Powell-Earnest Jenkins of Uniontown, Pa.
Richard was proud of his children but was overjoyed when he became a ‘Grandpa’ to Drew and Hayley McGettigan, Theresa, Sarah and Jeffrey Butler, Logan Spiker and Baylee Powell, Ryan, Klayton and Nathan Jenkins, and was estatic when he became ‘Great Grandpa’ to Brantley Intorre and Daxton McGettigan; several nieces and nephews.
Richard was originally from Brockway, Pa.
He was a United States Army Veteran.
Richard was very active in sports and was scouted by many professional teams for his numerous no hitters in baseball.
He decided to pursue a career in Law Enforcement and entered the Police Academy and enlisted with the Pennsylvania State Police on February 20, 1964 and served in the Uniontown and Belle Vernon Barracks honorably and faithfully until his retirement on August 31, 1990.
After retirement, Richard and his wife operated the Jailhouse Golf Driving Range and Miniature Golf on Morgantown Road in Uniontown, Pa., which he enjoyed as much as he loved golfing.
Richard had a kind and gentle heart and would help anyone who needed it.
Richard’s favorite hobbies were watching and encouraging his children in their many sports, golfing, woodcrafting, horseback riding, spending endless hours cutting grass.
Friends will be received in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, Pa., on Tuesday March 14, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m
Additional visitation on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at FAITH ASSEMBLY OF GOD, 609 Morgantown Road, Uniontown, Pa., with Service to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jason Lamer officiating.
Interment will follow at Sylvan Heights Cemetery Uniontown, Pa., with Full Military Rites and Honors accorded by the North Union Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8543.
Special Services will be conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police Ceremonial Unit.
The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 47 will conduct a Memorial at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
