Two people were flown from the scene of a three-vehicle accident on the northbound lane of Route 43 between the Elco exit and the Route 43 and Route 70 interchange on Tuesday morning.

A flock of turkeys running into the Mon/Fayette Expressway caused a three-vehicle accident that killed a California man and injured two others Tuesday morning, state police said.

Robert John Bishop, 48, was pronounced dead along Route 43 by the Washington County Coroner’s office at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco.

State police said driver Joseph Howard Impiccini, 65, of Brownsville slowed down to avoid hitting the turkeys near mile marker 34.9 northbound in California at about 8:15 a.m. Bishop rear-ended the vehicle, and his car remained stationary in the roadway. Driver Daniel Linden, 59, of Youngwood was driving a box truck, which collided with Bishop’s car, according to state police.

Linden and Impiccini were flown from the scene to Pittsburgh hospitals by medical helicopters.

Warco states that Bishop was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The cause and manner of Bishop’s death is pending.

Northbound traffic was rerouted to the Elco exit, but Route 43 has since been reopened.

State police, Charleroi and Fallowfield fire departments, Mon Valley, Brownsville and Rostraver EMS, LifeFlight and STAT MedEvac responded to the scene.
