Police continue investigation into fatal Wharton fire

By The 1 min read

A fire marshal and criminal investigation unit are continuing an investigation into an early morning fire that left a Fayette County Assistant Public Defender dead Sunday.

Mary Campbell Spegar, 54, of Wharton Township died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhallation and carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the Fayette County Coroner.

State police said the fire at her 102 Mill Run Road home did not appear to be suspicious, adding that the investigation is ongoing. A fire marshal is continuing to investigate what started the blaze, along with the state police criminal investigation unit.

A neighbor reported the fire at the rural house at about 7:30 a.m. When Farmington firefighters arrived minutes later, the house was already fully engulfed in flames.

Farmington firefighters found Campbell Spegar deceased in the house.
