Hurricane Nate remnants shower region

Remnants of Hurricane Nate, which hit the Gulf Coast with heavy rain, power outages and wind gusts, caused local rain showers Sunday and Monday.

“It’s generally been three-quarters of an inch (of rain) or less across our area here in the past 24 hours that the remnants have made,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Lee Hendricks said Monday morning. “It’s pushing to the northeast as we speak.”

No flood warnings were issued. Charleroi in Washington County received about 0.4 inches of rain, and Grays Landing in Fayette County received about 0.42 inches, Hendricks said.

“Basically, the rain we had just softened up the soil around here,” he said with a laugh.

A weather system pushing from the Southern Plains to the Ohio Valley is expected to create more rain Tuesday and Wednesday, with light rain, drizzle and showers on the forecast.

“By Wednesday night, things should start improving for the rest of the weekend,” he said.

He said temperatures will be in the low- to mid-50s, with highs in the low- to mid-70s through Sunday.

Nate was the first hurricane to hit Mississippi since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It made landfall in Louisiana late Saturday as a Category 1 Hurricane and hit Mississippi early Sunday. The hurricane lost much of its strength by Sunday, with its winds diminishing to a tropical depression as it dumped heavy rains on Alabama and Georgia before its remnants traveled north.
