Perryopolis department wants small games of chance license

By Rachel Basinger for The 3 min read

PERRYOPOLIS — The Parks and Recreation Committee the borough are going to gamble on getting approved for a small games of chance license.

At the borough council meeting last week, committee member Lisa Buchina questioned council on whether or not they were allowed to move forward seeking the license.

Borough Solicitor Michael Aubele said it’s his understanding that those eligible for such a license are charitable, civic, veteran’s groups and fire department organizations.

“As a government entity, I don’t think you can get one, but the borough has nothing against you applying if you want to try and see what they say,” he said.

Aubele added that they actually have to apply with Fayette County for the permit.

“We just want to have another option for fundraising,” Buchina said.

In other parks and recreation business, committee member Dan Powell said the term of Ruth Shields is set to expire at the end of the year and she is requesting that council renew her term for the upcoming year.

Resident Pam Newmeyer requested that council take into consideration any other letters of interest that come in to the borough.

“We have young people who want to get involved and I think they should know there’s an opening,” she said.

Anyone interested can send a letter of interest to the borough office at P.O. Box 304, Perryopolis, 15473. Interested individuals must be a resident of the borough.

Members of borough council will make their appointment for the position at the January reorganization meeting.

In other borough business, members of council agreed to spend $150 for trees for the Christmas at the Circle event that will be held Dec. 2. All of the roads around the circle will be closed to traffic slightly before noon, but Liberty Street will be closed to traffic around 9 a.m. because tables and chairs will be set up in the street for patrons to have a place to sit and eat or rest.

Members of council also agreed to spend $100 for a borough Christmas Tree at the library.

Affordable Roofing and Gutters was approved to replace the gutters at the post office at a cost of $850 and Schrock Buggy Works was approved to repair the two wheels on the cannon in town, with a price not to exceed $1,500.

“The cannon has been in disrepair and decay for several years, and it just needs fixed,” said Councilman Frank Masney.

Police Chief Roger Beadling recommended the hiring of James Garlick and Olivia Harshell as borough police officers, and council approved the recommendation. Harshell will more than likely become the school resource officer, they said.

Members of council also agreed to a three-year audit contract with McClure and Wolf for a cost of $7,000 in 2017, $8,000 in 2018 and $8,300 in 2019, plus expenses and they also approved having West Penn Power place a meter on the pole at the intersection of Independence Street and Republican Street in order to work the security camera there.
