A semi-trailer rolled onto its side on Route 40 west Friday morning, injuring the driver and leaking fluid near the Hopwood exit in South Union Township.

Westbound traffic was diverted to the Hopwood exit.

A medical helicopter and Fayette County Hazardous Materials Response Team were both called to the scene after the crash at 10:40 a.m., along with state police and local fire and ambulance services, officials said.

The driver was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, according to a Fayette County 911 supervisor. The condition of the driver is not yet known.

Light smoke emanated from the truck about 30 minutes after the crash. Fluids pooled on the roadway. First responders spread absorbent paper and lye on the spill.

Deep tire tracks were left in a grassy area between the exit ramp and the road, veering up an embankment above the ramp, skirting the edge of the roadway and ending with the truck flipped onto its passenger side.

Winds gusted from the road down the embankment Friday morning.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
