Parent-teacher days
Uniontown Area School District will hold parent-teacher conferences for students in all grades on the afternoon of April 6. Students will report to school at the regular time. Lunches will be served prior to early dismissal in all buildings. The dismissal times will be as follows:
n Elementary — Benjamin Franklin, 12:05 p.m.; Lafayette, 12:05 p.m.; Franklin, 12:15 p.m.; Menallen, 12:15 p.m.; Marclay, 12:30 p.m.; Wharton, 12:30 p.m.
n Secondary — A.J. McMullen, 12:15 p.m.; Benjamin Franklin (grades 6-8), 11:20 a.m.; Lafayette Middle, 11:20 a.m.; Uniontown Area High School, 11:30 a.m.
Lecture slated
Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, will host retired certified registered nurse practitioner Phyllis Stackhouse for a presentation on eating disorders in an installment of the campus’ Advocacy Series at 12:15 p.m., April 9, in the Swimmer Hall auditorium, located in the Williams building. The event is free and open to the public.
Stackhouse helped to develop the Healthy Eating and Living Support (HEALS) program at Penn State to provide medical services, counseling, and education to students affected by eating disorders. She was instrumental in the opening of an eating disorder clinic at State College.
Destination Day set
California University of Pennsylvania will hold a Destination Day from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., April 11, in Dixon Hall, room 312, for college students considering a transfer to the university. All services are free and the university will waive the $25 application fee for students who apply that day. Students will receive free transcript evaluation, information and support, and orientation scheduling. Evening hours are available by appointment only; phone appointments also are available. Internship opportunities
Waynesburg University has partnered with The Washington Center to provide students an opportunity to complete one-semester internships in Washington, D.C., beginning in the 2018-19 academic year. The Washington Center Academic Internship Program gives students an opportunity to form personal and professional connections while expanding global literacy and critical thinking skills. The priority application deadline is April 18 for the fall 2018 semester and Oct. 17 for the spring 2019 semester. Meeting scheduled
Community Connections, an educational cooperative initiative among Fayette County school districts, the Intermediate Unit 1 and New Directions Counseling Services, will meet from 6-7:30 p.m., April 24, at New Directions, located at 125 Chaffee St. Ext. in Uniontown.
Presentations by a representative from the IU1 will address supports for students to successfully participate in the least restrictive environment. Parents, teachers and community members are invited to attend.
AG registration
Albert Gallatin Area School District will hold kindergarten registration for the 2018-19 school year from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the following locations: Friendship Hill Elementary, April 30; Masontown Elementary, May 1; Smithfield Elementary, May 2; A.L. Wilson Elementary, May 3; and George J. Plava Elementary, May 4.
To be eligible for kindergarten, children must be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 31, 2018. At registration, parents must present their child’s official state birth certificate, residency verification and immunization record. Children will be given a vision, speech and kindergarten screening test. Children moving into the district should also register for school at this time. Packets will be available at each elementary school prior to registration. All questions should be referred to your local school.
LH registration
Laurel Highlands School District will hold kindergarten registration for the 2018-19 school year from 9-11 a.m. and from 1-3 p.m. at the following locations: Marshall Elementary, April 30; Hutchinson Elementary, May 1; Clark Elementary, May 2; and Hatfield Elementary, May 3.
To be registered, children must be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 31, 2018. At registration, parents must present the child’s proof of age, immunization record and proof of residency. All students will complete a pre-kindergarten benchmark screening, hearing test and vision test. In case of a scheduling conflict, contact the building principal.
