Teen charged with shooting man in leg in Redstone Township
A 17-year-old Uniontown boy is facing charges as an adult for allegedly shooting a man in the leg in Redstone Township Monday evening.
Brendon Ronald Akers of West Askren Street was arrested Monday night after running through the woods and a creek, police said.
The victim, Dominique Terrell Gregory, 22, was flown by medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia. It was unclear what precipitated the shooting.
Redstone Township Police were called to 16 Steel Street just before 5 p.m. Monday for a report of a male shooting at three people. Officers received information that two males ran from the scene, one wearing a ski mask. Witnesses told police they saw a male with shoulder-length dreadlocks fire several rounds at Gregory and run into the woods. Officers saw two males running into the woods between Steel Street and Filbert Orient Road, but were unable to locate them immediately. A 911 caller reported seeing a person matching the shooter’s description climbing out of a creek near the intersection of Park and Union streets. A neighbor reported to police the person went into 34 Union Street, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed in the case.
The homeowner gave officers permission to search the home, police said. Officers found Akers cold and shaking inside, reportedly telling officers he was cold from running through the creek. Akers told them he put on clothes belonging to a 13-year-old friend. He was arrested, and police conducted a search warrant at the home where they reportedly found soaking wet, ripped clothing in a trash bag. While police were taking the clothing to the evidence locker, Akers reportedly asked, “Ya’ll got my clothes, huh?” twice, court paperwork said.
Akers is facing two counts of criminal attempt to commit homicide and one count each of aggravated assault, prohibited possession of a firearm, firearms not to be carried without a license, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
He was arraigned at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday before on-call Magisterial District Judge Michael Metros, who set bail at $150,000 in the case. Akers is lodged in Fayette County Prison in lieu of bond. Court documents do not indicate he has hired an attorney. His preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for 1:30 p.m. April 23 before Metros.
