PennDOT construction projects abound throughout Fayette, Greene, Mon Valley

There’s at least one thing that all Pennsylvania Department of Transportation roadway improvement projects have in common, and PennDOT District 12 Community Relations Coordinator Valerie Petersen knows what it is.
“Every single one of them hits somebody’s home,” Petersen said.
Several upcoming construction projects throughout District 12 in Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties will change the way motorists think about getting home, according to Petersen.
One is a $1.6 million pavement preservation of Route 837 between Route 88 and the Allegheny County line in New Eagle and Union Township, with construction spanning from April, weather permitting, to June.
Another is a bridge improvement project on Route 7224 (Workman Road) over Big Sandy Creek in Wharton Township. J.F. Shea Construction, Inc., the contractor, is scheduled to begin work on the $288,000 project in June. The project is slated for completion in October.
Several major construction projects will continue throughout 2018 as well.
One is the ongoing total reconstruction of Interstate 70 from approximately three quarters of a mile west of the Ginger Hill interchange (Exit 32-A) extending east to roughly three quarters of a mile west of the Bentleyville interchange (Exit 32-B). That $75.9 million project is slated for completion in December and includes widening Interstate 70, replacing the bridge carrying I-70 over Wilson Road, Pigeon Creek and Norfolk Southern Railroad, and replacing the bridge carrying Route 917 over I-70.
A $3.2 million project to add a lane to the intersection of Routes 88 and 837 is scheduled for completion in early to mid-June. One lane in each direction is open with a wide restriction on both roads. The contractor, Frank Gavlik & Sons, is installing drainage on Route 88. The speed limit is posted as 25 mph in the work zone.
A $7.5 million improvement project for Route 31 (Main Street) in Mount Pleasant from the intersection with Bridgeport Street (Route 2001) to the intersection with Route 119 in East Huntingdon Township is expected to be done in September. The project includes milling and paving the roadway, reconstructing intersections in concrete, adding new drainage and traffic signals.
The contractor, Michael Facchiano, Contracting, Inc., is working on construction of sidewalk and handicap ramps at various intersections on Main Street, and intersection reconstruction will resume as soon as the weather improves later this spring. Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling through the project.
Motorists are to use caution when traveling and expect delays on Route 906 from 4th Street to the Monessen Riverfront Business Park, a $4.3 million project for which the contractor, Morgan Excavating, L.P., has started placing a water line.
A $3 million project to replace two structures, one over Rowes Run and one over Redstone Creek in Redstone Township, is tentatively slated for completion in October. The Route 4028 bridge over Rowes Run was slated to be closed with a detour in place beginning on Apr. 2.
Work was also slated to begin Apr. 1 on a $2.4 million project for base repair, milling, resurfacing and other improvements on Route 218 between Routes 3014 and 21 in Franklin Township and Waynesburg.
A multitude of projects will be tentatively let in 2018 as well.
One is the Ohiopyle Multimodal Gateway project, including bridge rehabilitation for the structure carrying Route 381 over the Youghiogheny River, which is tentatively slated to be let in October. The project will address the safest way to get pedestrians, specifically kayakers, from the parking areas to the new visitor’s center and the entrance to the boat launches, according to PennDOT.
Replacement of the structure carrying Route 201 (Blue Star Road) over Virgin Run in Franklin Township will tentatively be let out in September.
A pavement preservation and safety improvement project for Route 166 in Hibbs to Brownsville has a tentative let date of late April.
