Bullskin supervisors tying up purchases of flood damaged homes

By Greg Evanina for The 3 min read

Bullskin Township supervisors have completed the purchase of seven township homes that were seriously damaged by 2016 flooding, and hope to complete closings on the final three this week.

At their monthly meeting, Supervisor Roy Thayer said the township used hazard mitigation funds from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to complete the purchases.

Two of the 10 homes have already been torn down, supervisors said, and the remaining homes will also be razed.

In nearby Connellsville, officials there purchased and are working toward demolishing 23 homes that were deemed unsalvageable as a result of August 2016 floods that hit the area.

All of the homes in both areas must be purchased and demolished within a 90-day time frame set forth by PEMA.

In the township’s only other item of business besides paying bills, Thayer and Supervisor Chris Ohler took action on an aggregates contract that was tabled at the March meeting to determine which bidders were state approved and certified. At this month’s meeting, the supervisors voted to award the contract to provide six types of stone to Hanson Aggregates of Latrobe, which submitted a bid of $38,670.

Ohler explained that speed was the primary deciding factor in awarding the contract.

“What we take into consideration on these bids is delivery time,” he said. “With Hanson, I’ve called at lunchtime and I’ve had stone by 3 p.m. One of the things we do when we get a flood or whatever emergency is we need that stone delivered right away to the site, so that is some of our reasoning.”

Also, Ohler noted the township’s spring clean-up is scheduled for May 7, 8 and 9 in Section 1 of the township. For Section 2, the clean-up dates are May 14, 15 and 16, and residents of Section 3 will have their clean-up May 21, 22 and 23. The supervisors asked that people set out their garbage a week ahead of time and to inquire about what is not accepted.

Section 1 is the southern portion of the township from Country Club and Spruce Hollow roads south, including the Breakneck and Pennsville areas. Section 2 is the central portion of the township including Wooddale, McClure and Hammondville areas, up to White Bridge Road off of Route 982, the lower part of Kreinbrook Hill Road and over to Greenlick Hollow Road, the upper part of Spruce Hollow Road and Wiltrout Hollow Road.

The most northern part of the township, including the Laurelville, Acme and Bear Rocks areas, is the third section.
