4-H horse shows
Sis Hughes, who is in charge of the 4-H horse leader program, said 67 youths from three 4-H horse clubs are participating in the fair, including Bullskin, Dawson and Against All Odds. Competition so far included showmanship, riding classes, costume classes and a fun show with classes such as an obstacle course and musical sacks in which music is played and horses had to stand on empty sacks when it stopped. The production competition is Aug. 2.
The Theodori family of McClellandtown brought draft animals for the 4-H youths to participate in a draft-driving competition. Hughes said the competition also included its first miniature donkey.
Karen Hull, 4-H leader, reported, “The kids are having a blast. It’s a good week.”
Horticulture
Frances Rosensteel, of Dickerson Run, who co-chairs the department with her husband, Dan, said, “The exhibits are very good. They’re down just a little bit but our youth side is really good. Our backyard gardeners grow quality stuff.”
Rosensteel simplified requirements for youths to make it easier for them to participate: “I want the kids to get involved. You start in your youth and come back as an adult. I like to keep it going.”
Youth Building
Jennifer Deichert, of North Union Township, Penn State Extension educator, said youths submitted a lot of sewing and art projects and several scrapbooks, noting the quality of the exhibits is “quite good.”
Judge Dee Strong, of Smock, said, “It was wonderful. The hardest part is I pictured the little child doing this and how can I say it’s not perfect? I was a 4-Her and a 4-H leader. I never missed a fair for 64 years.”
