Four SCI-Greene employees sent to hospital after exposure
Four guards at the State Correctional Institution at Greene were sent to the hospital Monday evening after becoming ill due to exposure to an unknown substance.
Superintendent Robert D. Gilmore reported the illness started as the corrections officers were searching an inmate’s property around 7 p.m. Gilmore said prison officials followed protocol, isolating the employees and calling for hazard materials assistance.
The four were taken to Southwest Regional Hospital for treatment.
“Our corrections officers’ safety is extremely important to us,” Gilmore said. “The fact that these officers came in contact with a substance that may have made them ill, is something we do not take lightly.”
As a result of this incident, the entire prison is now locked down. Facility officials and state police are investigating.
