Two SCI-Fayette corrections officer hospitalizations after exposure incidents Saturday
Two substance exposure incidents happened at State Correctional Institution at Fayette Saturday, both resulting in corrections officer hospitalizations.
A corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Fayette was taken to the hospital Saturday morning after he was apparently exposed to drugs during an inspection.
He was administered Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal drug, according to a release from communications director Susan McNaughton.
The officer was performing a fire/safety/security check at the Luzerne Township prison when he became sickened with a flushed face and rapid heart rate. After he was given Narcan, he was taken to a local hospital by ambulance for further treatment, according to McNaughton.
The officer’s name was not released.
In a separate incident that a release from McNaughton said was another case of substance contact, an officer developed bumps across his front hairline after having escorted an inmate who had apparently been under the influence at approximately 9:50 p.m. Saturday.
The unnamed officer was found to have elevated blood pressure and was taken by ambulance to Uniontown Hospital for examination and treatment, according to McNaughton, who added that the officer was discharged from the hospital at 1:40 a.m. Sunday and returned to the prison at 3:20 a.m. to finish his shift.
On Aug. 13, the State Correctional Institute at Greene was put into lockdown after four guards became ill following exposure to an unknown substance. They were taken to a hospital for treatment and released later that night.
