Selma Elaine (Dingle) Blazek, age 94, of Masontown, PA, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018.

She was born in Denbo, PA, on June 1, 1924 to the late Richard and Mae (Hurton) Dingle.

Selma grew up in Bobtown and graduated from Point Marion High School in 1941. After high school, she went to work at the Pittsburgh Mercantile Company store, where she was put in charge of creating window displays. On August 9, 1947, she married her sweetheart, John W. Blazek. They were married for 60 years prior to his passing.

Selma was a lifelong member of the Masontown United Methodist Church where she served as Communion Steward for 21 years. Selma’s greatest joys were her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

At an early age, Selma began keeping score for the Shannopin Mine baseball team, for which her father was the manager and catcher. This was the beginning of her passion for baseball. She continued as an avid Pittsburgh Pirate fan, never missing a game on the radio or television or attending games. Her favorite Mother’s Day and birthday presents were tickets to Pirate games. The Steelers, too, earned her special support. She loved to bake and her wonderful Christmas cookies were a special family treat.

After her husband retired, Selma and John took many bus trips seeing their favorite places and making many close friends. Selma enjoyed family vacations at Buckroe Beach, VA and playing cards with her friends. Even as her health failed, Selma encouraged her caretakers to play cards and to try to play “more skillfully” so she would be challenged. Selma always took pride in her housework and appearance.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Gloria Nassar, Elizabeth Dingle, Richard Dingle, Jr. and (Infant sister) Dorothy Dingle.

Selma is survived by her two children: her daughter Denise M. Martin and her husband Jeffrey of German Township and her son John K. Blazek and his wife Kathleen of Manassas, VA.

She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Christopher V. Martin of Arlington, VA, Jesse B. Martin of German Township and Casey N. Blazek of Manassas, VA. The following sisters: Jacqueline Cardilli of Victor, NY, Marlene Bielak of North Royalton, Ohio and Constance Wiltrout of Holly Springs, NC.
