South Connellsville convenience store damaged in early morning fire
A major crisis may have been avoided Thursday morning when a South Connellsville convenience store caught fire.
Marky Finner’s Supermart was out of gas when the back room caught fire at about 4:45 a.m.
“They didn’t have fuel at the time,” said South Connellsville Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Jeremy Grubbs. “I think they were waiting to get a load in.”
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the back room at the 1513 South Pittsburgh Street store, where he said store owners kept paperwork and order information.
A state police fire marshal was called to investigate.
Grubbs said the convenience store could potentially reopen after a remodel. The loss of the store hits the small borough hard, he said.
“It’s a shame. That’s the only convenience store we have in South Connellsville,” he said. “I grew up here. I’m 29, and it’s been there my whole life.”
No injuries were reported. The store was closed until 6 a.m.
South Connellsville firefighters were assisted on the scene by New Haven Hose, Connellsville Township, D., L. & V., Everson, Bullskin and Scottdale fire departments, Fayette EMS and South Connellsville police.
