A 50-year-old Uniontown man was rescued from a ledge above the Youghiogheny River in Connellsville Tuesday morning after a fall, police said.

He was waiting for a train at the Amtrak station on North Water Street between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. when he fell, according to Connellsville Police Department Cpl. Bryan Kendi. He said he is not sure what led to the fall.

“He somehow slipped and fell, and injured a bunch of ribs, and was basically just holding on so he didn’t slip into the river,” he said.

A passerby heard the man yelling and called 911. A Connellsville police officer climbed down the ledge and secured the man before he could be rescued. New Have Hose Co. fire department also responded to the scene. The rescue took less than 30 minutes, Kendi said.

His name was not released.

He was taken to Highlands Hospital in Connellsville for treatment, Kendi said.
