Man surrenders after six-hour standoff in Melcroft
A 29-year-old man eventually surrendered to police after barricading himself in a Melcroft home for about six hours.
Troy Allan “T.J.” Breakiron Jr. was arrested after state police and a Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) surrounded 122 Melcroft Road, setting off flash grenades and deploying gas. The nearby homes were evacuated.
State police responded to the home to investigate a vehicle theft. Breakiron also had an active arrest warrant for theft and a warrant for a parole violation, according to state police Tpr. Robert Broadwater.
The SERT Team deployed The Rook, an armored critical incident vehicle and hailed him on a loudspeaker.
“We’re not here to hurt you. We just want to work through the issues. You’ve been through this before,” police said on the loudspeaker.
No information was released on whether Breakiron had previously barricaded himself in a home.
His mother also spoke to Breakiron on the loudspeaker, saying she loved him. Just before he came outside, he asked police to tell his mother he loved her too. His family applauded after he walked outside.
A portion of Melcroft Road was closed until Breakiron was arrested, just yards from Ed’s Car Wash, which was the site of a mass shooting earlier this year. On Jan. 28, Timothy O’Brien Smith, 28, gunned down Chelsea Lou Cline, 25, Seth William Cline, 21, Cortney Sue Snyder, 23, and William Scott Porterfield, 27, before committing suicide.
