CPD launching aggressive driving enforcement in August

By Amy Fauth afauth@heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

Aggressive driving and speeding are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities. However, some motorists aren’t even aware that they are aggressive drivers.

The Connellsville police have a message for you — they will be watching.

Connellsville police have announced the department will join state police and more than 235 multiple agencies to conduct the third targeted aggressive driving enforcement in August.

The third wave of this enforcement will aim to reduce the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. According to a press release, the enforcement will focus on running red lights, violations of the Steer Clear Law, tailgating and speeding.

The Steer Clear Law states that when a driver comes upon an incident along the side of the road that requires an emergency responder, such as the police, ambulance, fire department, tow truck driver or PennDOT vehicle, they are required to “steer clear” or move at least one lane away. If it isn’t possible to move one lane over, motorists must reduce their speed. Failure to adhere to this law could result in a citation with fines up to $250. However, those fines may be doubled if drivers in this situation are also cited for traffic violations. Also, if the violation results in the injury of a worker, the driver could also have their driver’s license suspended for up to 90 days.

This enforcement is part of a statewide Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by PennDOT and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
