Patricia A. Kaider Shavel

Patricia A. (Kaider) Shavel, 75, of Greensburg Pa., passed away Monday March 5, 2018.

She was born July 26, 1942, in Uniontown, Pa., daughter of the late John and Pauline (Benko) Kaider.

In addition to h961er parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Kaider.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew “Jerry” Shavel; her sons: Scott Shavel and wife Becky of North Huntingdon, Pa., and Mark Shavel of Greensburg, Pa.; her daughter, Kristen Janicki and husband Thomas of Jefferson Hills Pa.; four grandchildren: Nick Shavel, Julia Shavel, Alexander Janicki and Aubrey Janicki; her sister, Marlene Roll and husband Art of Hopwood, Pa.; her brother, Jerry Kaider and wife Debbie of Uniontown, Pa.; many nieces and nephews.

Patti graduated from South Union High School as Salutatorian of the class in 1960.

She graduated from California State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics Education and earned a Master’s Degree from West Virginia University.

She began teaching at Dunbar Township Junior-Senior High School in 1963.

Marriage to Jerry in 1965 took her to southern New Jersey to teach. They returned to western Pennsylvania in 1969 where she taught at Norwin Junior High School.

After they began their family, Patti returned to teaching at Greensburg- Salem Middle School, from which she retired in 1999.

She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Greensburg.

Patti was most happy when she was hosting family holiday dinners, which she did for more than four decades.

Along with Jerry, she loved to share their home in Naples, Florida with their children and grandchildren on their vacations.

Friends will be received today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg, PA 15601 (724.837.5211). Prayers will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 12 Noon in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg.

Interment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westmoreland County Blind Association, 911 South Main Street, Greensburg, PA 15601.
