Charges were filed against a Washington County man who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and stole her phone and car over the weekend.

Centerville Borough Police charged Donald Deems, 52, of Vestaburg with robbery, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, simple assault, harassment and multiple vehicle violations before Magisterial District Judge Joshua Kanalis.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, police responded to the Friendship Lounge in Richeyville for an assault where Sherry Pierce told them that Deems assaulted her at 1:37 a.m. Sunday.

Pierce reportedly told police that Deems was calling her profanities because of a text message she received on her iPhone. He allegedly punched her in her upper chest, grabbed a handful of her hair and violently shook her head.

He then grabbed Pierce’s $200 iPhone and left the bar, driving her vehicle away from the scene without her permission, police alleged.

Police said Deems does not possess a valid driver’s license and has a DUI-related suspension.

Deems is housed in the Washington County Prison without bail. Court records indicated Kanalis was going to set bail, but denied it when Deems could not provide an address.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. May 11 before Kanalis.
