Harp Ensemble set
The Ringgold Harp Ensemble, comprised of middle and high school students from the Ringgold School District, will present a Spring Tea from 2-4 p.m., May 19, in the cafeteria of Ringgold Middle School, located at 2 Ram Drive, Monongahela. Tickets are on sale in the middle school main office, which can be reached at 724-258-2211. Tickets are $15 and include admittance, treats and a variety of teas. Attendees may bring their favorite teacup to use. The Ringgold Harp Ensemble will provide harp music for the event. The proceeds will benefit the Harp Ensemble Scholarship Fund, which enables harp students to attend the Ohio Scottish Arts School (OSAS) at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, a week-long event that provides extensive classes in Scottish harp taught by instructors from the U.S. and Scotland.
Summer courses
Westmoreland County Community College is currently holding registration for summer credit classes. Classes are open to current and new students, including those who attend other colleges and universities during the academic year. High school juniors and seniors, with recommendation from their guidance counselors or principals, are also eligible to enroll. A 10-week session and five-week session begin May 21; an eight-week session begins June 6; and a second five-week session begins June 27.
Classes will be conducted at the college’s seven locations, including the Westmoreland-Advanced Technology Center near Mount Pleasant and Westmoreland-Fayette County in Uniontown. Students also have the option of taking classes online. Tuition for summer courses is $124 per credit for Westmoreland County residents. Camp offered
Waynesburg University will hold a STEAM camp, July 15-19, to promote learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The camp is open to high school students. The cost to attend is $250. To register, visit online at www.waynesburg.edu/steamcamp. The deadline to register is June 29. A limited number of scholarships are available for students who are in need of financial assistance. To apply, complete the form on the registration webpage. Destination Day set
California University of Pennsylvania will hold a Destination Day from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., June 7, in Dixon Hall, room 312, for college students considering a transfer to the university. All services are free and the university will waive the $25 application fee for students who apply that day. Students will receive free transcript evaluation, information and support, and orientation scheduling. Evening hours are available by appointment only; phone appointments also are available. Summer lunch
Champion Christian School will offer a summer lunch program at its north campus in Donegal daily Monday through Friday beginning June 11. Children age 18 and under eat free. The cost of an adult meal is $3.50.
Credential offered
Beginning in fall 2018, early childhood and elementary education students at California University of Pennsylvania who successfully complete a bachelor’s degree program in grades pre-K to 4 education will earn the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Integrative STEM Education Endorsement, a credential that documents their ability to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math concepts into classroom learning activities. All students will complete the coursework and field experiences required for the STEM credential as part of their regular studies. Students in the undergraduate special education certification program for grades pre-K to 4 will also earn the STEM endorsement.
