A Uniontown man is behind bars for allegedly beating a man with a broom handle on North Gallatin Avenue at about 8 a.m. Monday.

Mark Charles Matlock, 38, of Lincoln Street was found hiding in a backyard nearby after telling a woman he was drunk and hiding from police, according to court paperwork.

The alleged victim, Richard J. Gomez, was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, with severe swelling to his eye and significant bleeding from his head, according to court paperwork. A broken broom handle covered in blood was found nearby.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in Matlock’s case, he was at a birthday party nearby when he lost his cellphone. He called it, and heard it ringing from Gomez’ pocket. The two men were told to leave, and began fighting outside.

He is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned Monday afternoon by Magisterial District Judge Nathan A. Henning, who set bail at $20,000.

Matlock remains in Fayette County Prison in lieu of bail.
