A 69-year-old Dunbar man riding a small motorcycle was killed at about 6 a.m. Wednesday when a pickup truck hit him on Route 119.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as John Canada. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

State police did not immediately release the name of the second driver.

Police are investigating whether the truck driver was impaired.

The motorcycle was stopped in the turning lane at a red light, preparing to turn left onto Mount Braddock Road. The truck driver, traveling southbound, drifted into the turning lane and hit the motorcycle, according to state police Trooper Robert Broadwater.

“At this time, the investigation is still ongoing. But according to witness statements, it appears the driver of the truck dozed off,” he said.

The truck driver was a man in his 50s.

Route 119 was closed for several hours and reopened at about 9 a.m.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
