The pictured pickup truck hit a man crossing Fayette Street at about 10 a.m. Thursday. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at Uniontown Hospital. Police are investigating the causes of the crash.

A Uniontown man died after he was hit by a pickup truck on Fayette Street near the five corners intersection in Uniontown just before 10 a.m. Thursday.

He was taken to Uniontown Hospital as Fayette EMS personnel gave the man CPR, where he was later pronounced dead, Uniontown City Police said.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office did not identify the man Thursday afternoon.

Fayette Street was closed between South Mount Vernon Avenue and Morgantown Street, and South Street also closed four about four hours as police investigated. A state police unit assisted city police in their investigation.

The man made an appointment at Laurel Ridge Eye Care before crossing Fayette Street, where he was hit near George C. Marshall Plaza, according to Uniontown City Police Capt. David Rutter.

The truck hit the man from behind.

“He never saw it coming,” Rutter said.

The man was wearing dark clothing, and an umbrella limited his view of traffic, he said.

The umbrella, upside down and slightly damaged, marked the spot where the man was hit during the investigation. Two shoes, several yards apart were also in the road.

Police are investigating whether speed, or any other driving violations were factors in the crash. The driver is cooperating with the investigation, Rutter said. He was unsure if the driver called 911, adding a passenger jumped out of a vehicle and called, while several bystanders attempted lifesaving efforts before emergency crews arrived.

He noted many pedestrians have been hit in the area, especially in cold or inclement weather.

“You have to be twice as cautious, and be aware of your surroundings,” he said.
