Police work to identify a suspect after a man was shot in the leg on South Street in Uniontown just after midnight Friday and flown to a trauma center. No suspects were in custody as of about 11:30 a.m.

A 29-year-old man was shot in the leg on South Street in Uniontown just after midnight Friday and flown to a trauma center, police said.

Steven “Doodle” Lewis of Uniontown was released from the hospital Friday. He did not identify who shot him. Uniontown City Police are working to gather surveillance footage and witness statements, according to Lt. Tom Kolencik.

State police also responded to the scene and then reported to the helipad where a large crowd gathered as Fayette EMS transported the victim. He was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, police said.

Jared Volek, owner of DiMarco’s Bistro & Cantina, said a slow night turned into violence without forewarning. The victim, a regular at the bar, stopped inside, briefly talked to someone and left without buying anything. Then Volek and the patrons heard gunfire.

“Everyone heard the shots. They were moving away from the door,” he said.

The quiet bar scene turned to panic, he said. Volek said he saw the man lying in the street.

“He’s a good kid to us. He never caused any problems here,” he said.

Nothing appeared to preempt the shooting during the brief stop in the bar, Volek said.

“There was no scuffle, nothing,” he said. “It was a slow night, and then this happened.”

Friday’s shooting was the second time Lewis was shot outside a Uniontown bar and survived. On May 5, 2017, he was shot five times outside Esther’s Tavern at about 2 a.m. Three bullets hit him in vital areas. He did not identify the shooter, and the case remains unsolved.
