Lieutenant Governor visiting Fayette for recreational marijuana listening tour
Lt. Gov. John Fetterman will visit Fayette County Tuesday night as a part of his listening tour throughout Pennsylvania.
The Fayette County stop will be at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus in Lemont Furnace at Swimmer Hall from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. “to gather input from Pennsylvanians about the possibility of legalizing recreational marijuana,” according to a press release from Fetterman’s office.
Those who are unable to attend can submit comments remotely through the Lieutenant Governor’s Facebook page or website. The event is open to the public. Local legislators were also invited.
Washington County residents expressed strong support for legalization at Fetterman’s listening tour stop last week. There was standing-room only for a crowd of at least 200 people at the Center on Strawberry in the city of Washington.
Fetterman said his opinion did not matter, and he was concerned about only hearing thoughts of residents. Locals appeared passionate about their stance, and discussed making marijuana safer through government testing and regulation.
Greene County residents were split on the issue at Fetterman’s tour stop in Waynesburg University’s Alumni Hall last week. About 34 people voiced opinions, some concerned about taxes and others concerned about marijuana as a gateway drug.
Local legislators said in October they would not support a recreational marijuana bill.
Recreational cannabis is legal in nine states and the District of Columbia, and medical cannabis is legal in 31 states and the District of Columbia.
Fetterman began his tour in February and plans to visit all 67 counties in Pennsylvania to gauge public opinion.
Fetterman will also visit Westmoreland County at the Greensburg Garden & Civic Center in Greensburg from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 4 and Somerset County at North Star High School in Boswell from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7.
