A Smithton woman is behind bars for allegedly breaking into the home of an 81-year-old woman in South Huntingdon Township at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The woman hid in the bathroom while Theresa Lynn Harris, 56, allegedly rummaged through her belongings in her Kott Road home.

State police said Harris stole $20 from the woman’s change purse and fled. Troopers found Harris at her home on Fitz Henry Road. Police said she resisted arrest before she was taken into custody.

Harris is charged with burglary, criminal trespass, resisting arrest, theft and disorderly conduct. She was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Charles D. Moore, who set bail at $5,000. Harris was unable to post bail and remains in Fayette County Prison.

Her preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for 9:10 a.m. July 31 before Moore, according to court documents.
