Christina Troll, representing VFW Pennsylvania, won first place in the national Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy competition, held at the recent VFW National Conference in Washington D.C.

She received the $30,000 T.C. Selman Memorial Scholarship award and delivered her winning essay.

Troll, a senior, was sponsored by VFW Post 554 and its Auxiliary in Somerset. She represented the 23rd District, which comprises Fayette and Somerset Counties.

The Voice of Democracy Program is an oral essay competition for students in grades nine through 12. This year’s theme was “Why My Vote Matters,” chosen by B.J. Lawrence, national commander.

“Raising today’s youth to be patriotic, civically minded Americans is vital to ensuring a prosperous future for our nation,” said Lawrence. “The VFW’s Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen competitions help mold today’s students into the strong and great leaders we’ll need tomorrow.”

More information if available on the national VFW website.
