Open house scheduled

Westmoreland County Community College will hold an open house 5-7 p.m. March 20 at its Fayette County center, 140 N. Beeson Blvd., Uniontown. The event will provide prospective students with information on the college’s programs of study, schedule of online classes, financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and the admissions process. Charleroi registration

Charleroi Area School District will hold kindergarten registration for the 2019-20 school year 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. March 21 in the Alumni Room in the gym above the football stadium. To be eligible, a child must be 5 years of age on or before July 31. Parents must present the child’s birth certificate, proof of residency, a state-issued photo ID and the child’s immunization records. Children eligible for first grade who are not already attending the Charleroi Area Elementary Center may register at this time. The above documents are required. Information: 724-483-5554.

Meeting scheduled

Community Connections, an educational cooperative initiative among Fayette County school districts, the Intermediate Unit 1 and New Directions Counseling Services, will meet 6-7:30 p.m. March 26 at New Directions, 125 Chaffee St. Ext., Uniontown. Presentations by representatives from Chestnut Ridge Counseling Services and the Uniontown Area School District will provide an overview of services and procedures associated with school-based counseling and child study teams for students demonstrating academic or behavioral difficulties. Parents, teachers and community members are invited to attend.

Conference slated

Waynesburg University will host a conference on cyber and financial crime March 28. The conference is open to professionals and students in CPA and forensic accounting, law enforcement and cyber security. The cost to attend is $35. Sessions will be held on topics of social media, open source intelligence, financial crime, the Bank Secrecy Act and fraud. Registration: www.waynesburg.edu/cyberconference. Culinary course offered

Westmoreland County Community College will offer a Culinary Quick Start program at the Fayette County Career and Technical Institute, 175 Georges Fairchance Road, Uniontown. The course will prepare individuals for entry-level positions in the food service industry. Classes will be held 4:30-9:30 p.m. on the following dates: April 16-17 and 24-25; May 1-2, 7-9 and 14-15. Topics include basic kitchen vocabulary and ingredients, knife skills and safety, basic food preparation, sanitation and job search preparation. Participants can earn ServSafe certification and college credits that can be applied toward WCCC’s culinary arts program. The cost to attend is $395 for tuition and a $235 materials fee. Scholarship available

The Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation of Pittsburgh is accepting applications for the 2019 Community Service Scholarship, which awards $10,000 for post-secondary education tuition costs to a high school senior who exemplifies commitment to serving and improving his/her community. Eligible high schools include those in the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Somerset, Venango, Washington and Westmoreland. Exhibit open

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, is currently hosting the Building Bridges exhibit, presented by the non-profit Family Diversity Projects, through March 29 at the campus library. Co-sponsored by the ACLU and Center for New Americans in Massachusetts in an attempt to challenge myths and stereotypes that perpetuate hatred toward a marginalized population, the exhibit features photographs and interviews with people who have come to the U.S as immigrants or refugees.
