Charlotte Diehl, 90, of Farmington, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, November 13, 2019. Her husband of 71 years, Robert, was by her side when her spirit departed her body to be with God.

Charlotte was born October 16, 1929, to William Lindsey and Florence Morris Newcomer of Uniontown. Charlotte was an only child and deeply cherished by her loving parents.

Charlotte attended Uniontown High School and graduated with the Class of 1946. While attending high school she met the love of her life. She called him Bobby and he called her Snookie. They knew, very early on in their relationship, that their love was special. They married in March of 1948 and soon thereafter, created a family and built a home together. They reared three daughters, Ruth Florence Machtley of Tucson, Ariz., Carol Susan Diehl of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Nancy Lynn Hartley of Waynesburg.

Charlotte’s life was focused on her desire to be of service to others. Educationally, she pursued a home economics undergraduate degree at Carnegie Institute of Technology, a Masters degree in Social Work from West Virginia University, and a Masters degree in Counseling from Duquesne University. Her educational achievements led her to work professionally at Child Welfare Services in Uniontown, to establish the Social Work Department at Uniontown Hospital, to be a faculty member in West Virginia University’s graduate School of Social Work, and lastly, to serve as a guidance counselor in the Uniontown Area School District. Many individuals benefited from her listening ear, care and wise counsel over the extended span of her professional career.

Also of extreme value to Charlotte and her husband were the many years they attended the Uniontown Church of the Brethren on Robinson Street. When they were quite young they were appointed as deacons and faithfully carried out their duties as helpers to others. Charlotte also contributed her expansive and expressive music skills to the church, serving as church organist and choir director for 45 years. On a number of occasions, Charlotte and her husband were elected to serve as delegates at the church’s national annual conference.

Surviving Charlotte’s death are her immediate family members, including her husband, Robert; her three daughters; her sons-in-law, Ryan Hartley, Richard and Connie Diehl; her six grandchildren and their spouses; her eight great-grandchildren; her Newcomer cousins and their spouses, David Machtley, Keith Diehl, and Pamela and Ed Jacobs.

Special acknowledgment also goes to all who provided loving care for Charlotte at her home, including Ethel Morrison, Danielle Beall and Angela Bricker, as well as the Albert Gallatin Hospice, affiliated with Amedisys.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 17, in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, Farmington. Visitation will continue in The Uniontown Church of the Brethren, Robinson Street, from 10 until the 11 a.m. hour of service Monday, November 18, with Pastor Edwin Moore and Pastor Cheryl Marszalek officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Church of The Brethren Cemetery.

The family requests that any special contributions be made to the Uniontown Church of The Brethren, Robinson Street, Uniontown.
