The following information details achievements in education earned by those in the Herald-Standard readership area.

Students recognized

Calissa Jones and Katherine Prettyman, seniors at Laurel Highlands High School, were named “Commended Students” by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. of Evanston, Ill., as part of its 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Jones and Prettyman will each receive a letter of commendation recognizing them as scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 students nationwide were recognized as “Commended Students” for exceptional academic promise for placing among the top scorers who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 pre-SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Clemmer honored

Lauren Clemmer, principal of Lafayette Elementary-Middle School in the Uniontown Area School District, was among three alumni honored by the Washington & Jefferson College Alumni Association for professional and personal accomplishments.

Clemmer, a 2006 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College, received the association’s annual Outstanding Young Alumni Award. During her time at W&J, Clemmer was inducted into both the English and education honorary fraternities, Sigma Tau Delta and Kappa Delta Epsilon. She was a dean’s list scholar for four consecutive semesters and graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts in English, a minor in education and a certification in secondary education in 2006.

Clemmer taught English in Albert Gallatin Area School District for 11 years, including multiple years as a high school AP English language and composition and AP English literature teacher. A Uniontown Area graduate, Clemmer returned to her home district in 2018 when she was named principal of Lafayette Middle School. In August, she was promoted to principal of the school’s entire K-8 program.

Clemmer is currently enrolled in the doctor of education in administration and leadership program at California University of Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership studies from West Virginia University.
