AG student facing disciplinary action following alleged assault on football field
An Albert Gallatin Area High School student is facing school disciplinary action after he allegedly attacked a player from a West Virginia school during a game Oct. 11, causing a concussion.
Investigators will determine whether the student will face criminal charges.
The injured Hampshire High School student was taken to a local hospital for treatment, officials said. His helmet was not on when he was allegedly assaulted on the field. Both students are minors.
“He is progressing in his concussion protocol,” said Trey Stewart, athletic director at the Romney, West Virginia, school. “If that progress continues, he should make a full recovery.”
A video that was posted online and later deleted appears to show the Albert Gallatin student acting violently toward a Hampshire High School student during the game in Fayette County.
“Obviously, the school district is taking it seriously and we don’t take an act of this nature lightly,” said Albert Gallatin superintendent Christopher Pegg, adding the school is following its protocols.
School district police and Fayette County juvenile probation are investigating to determine whether any charges will be filed.
“Whatever charges they file will be up to them,” Pegg said.
Pegg did not release any additional information on the student, or elaborate on the disciplinary action.
“We’re trying to move forward from it, and making sure we do everything necessary to address this situation,” he said. “And moving forward, I don’t believe one incident should define a program or a high school or a district. We are dealing with it very appropriately and taking it very seriously.”
Last year, school directors in Albert Gallatin voted to suspend the school’s participation in the WPIAL. Starting this year, the team has played an independent schedule, facing teams from neighboring states.
