Uniontown woman charged with manslaughter for 2021 drowning of son
A Uniontown woman whose 2-year-old son drowned in 2021 now faces a manslaughter charge for negligent care.
Amanda Grace Sloan, 37, also faces a felony of endangering the welfare of children, and a misdemeanor of reckless endangerment.
Ezra John Thomas, 2, died Sept. 4, 2021 after drowning in a neighbor’s pool. According to the criminal complaint, Sloan was staying at a home on Jenkins Street in Menallen Township with her two children at the time.
Police said that while Sloan was sleeping, Thomas got out of the house that morning, crawled up the stairs of the neighbor’s pool deck and fell into the pool.
According to the complaint, the neighbor provided police with home security footage.
Sloan told police at Uniontown Hospital that she put up a baby gate before going to bed the previous night. When she woke up at about 10 a.m., she realized Thomas was not in the room, according to the complaint.
Police took photos of the room were Sloan was staying with her children and described the “baby gate” as three feet of plywood and an ironing board at the entrance of the bedroom.
According to the complaint, police interviewed Sloan again this past Saturday. She said she lived at the Jenkins Street address for about three months.
Sloan told police that the entrance only locked from the inside, and she did not wake up to lock the door after her sister-in-law left for work that morning.
Sloan was arraigned Tuesday morning before Magisterial District Judge Jennifer Jefferies, who released her on $25,000 unsecured bond.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. April 25.
