A nonprofit environmental group based in Bridgeville has filed suit against a Greene County coal mining company and its parent companies for alleged clean water violations arising from water discharge from Emerald Coal Mine No. 1 in Franklin Township.

Citizens Coal Council filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Allegheny County on Jan. 2 claiming that Emerald Coal Resources LP, which operate the Emerald Coal Mine, and its parent companies Foundation Coal Corporation and Alpha Natural Resources Inc. based in Virginia, have permitted hundreds of violations of the federal Clean Water Act at the mine over the last five years.

The suit calls for an injunction to stop the alleged water contamination and for the companies to pay civil penalties of at least $32,500 per violation.
