Allegheny County Bomb Squad called to dispose of WWII-era mortar round in Waynesburg

Waynesburg police called on the Allegheny County Bomb Squad Wednesday for help disposing of World War II-era explosives.
Waynesburg Chief of Police Billy Nichols said a man reported to the police station shortly before 2 p.m. that he had come across a mortar round while cleaning out his grandfather’s belongings.
Nichols declined to identify the man, but said he had found a German mortar tube from WWII in the attic of his First Avenue home.
“He discovered a mortar round in a sock … We called the bomb squad, and they showed up and took it away,” Nichols said.
Nichols said the man had moved the mortar round out of the attic to the living room before police arrived.
According to Nichols, the bomb squad put the mortar round in a “blast bag” for later detonation.
Greene County Emergency Management also assisted at the scene.
